April 9th, 2013Olympia Dukakis enters leading with her left. Her face projects the determination familiar from many stage and screen roles, but, at the end of a long day of rehearsals early in October, she’s walking with a limp – still wearing an elastic support band on her right knee after an accident in the summer.
“I’m weary,” she says. But as soon as she sits down, the 81-year-old actress betrays no sign of that. Her voice is electric with enthusiasm; her gestures, animated. Her fingers drum or slap the table for emphasis.
“She’s a force of nature,” says American Conservatory Theater Artistic Director Carey Perloff, noting how completely Dukakis throws herself into rehearsals.
Dukakis is back at ACT, in rehearsal for “Elektra,” which begins previews this week. It’s her sixth or seventh show with San Francisco’s flagship theater company, depending on whether one counts “Hecuba” twice. Dukakis reprised her monumental 1995 title role – her company debut – when Perloff revived her production in ’98.
